The fact is that the philippines or any other developing country may not be for everyone. It depends on your location and what you are willing to give up in order to live a different life. I live in California, which is supposed to be one of the best places to live on the planet, talk about hype. No place is perfect, and if you are broke, then it doesn't matter where you are because every place sucks. The whole point of retirement in a developing country is to make your pension go farther, and we are no different as we tend to live to our means . If your pension is over 2k a month and you can live well on 1800 a month, then you can put the rest away. This will only happen if you keep your finances to yourself as the Filipinos don't understand what extra money is as someone in the family is always in need . You can guarantee that a rainy day is coming and if you are not prepared it may be the only rainy day that you will see . The poverty is emense, and you just need to get used to it and realize that it is what it is . If you have the money, then things do tend to go smoother, plus having a lot of patience helps .

I did things a little differently. I naught a house with my wife in north Caloocan city where the electricity is reliable. That was 28,000 at the time with the exchange. It’s a 3 bedroom 3 bath I added about 9,000 in upgrades. We had a car she had before I got here and I got a motorbike for myself so I’m not stuck not being able to drive something on Tuesdays because of the lottery.😂 but our monthly expenses are around 1700.00 a month and we live what you would call an upper middle class life. She still works as a teacher and I’m retired with a business in America. We travel to America 2 times a year. That’s a bigger expense. If you’re not good at saving and budgeting you can be broke off 8k a month. Always have a backup plan with family back home with the money for airfare.

Rich or poor? The reality is only losers who have failed in the west live in 3rd world squalor. Is it all hype? HELL yes. I lived there. No person who can afford to live well in the west chooses to live in a 3rd world mess. So few of you show the reality of the filth and smell. You show always the nicest places. Take a walk in reality and show that video. Show the streets that are ALWAYS wet and disgusting....garbage everywhere. It's a country that is more like the US in the late 1800s. Notice there are NO retired military officers there. Why? Because they can afford to live in a developed nation. The PI is a mess and has always been a mess. So the people are nice. Yay.

I would miss my 2nd amendment rights too much. Too bad we didn't keep the Philippines as a territory, although the way the mainland is going not being part of America may be a good thing. I would be concerned about China, they have a huge population and not enough women, should the US fall China will have free reign in the Pacific.

i've been watching you, Mark, and Paul for years. I've notice that all of you have begun to talk about the realities of living in the Philippines a lot more. That probably comes from your greater exposure to other expats through your UA-cam channels and the newbie expat reactions to first time living in SE Asia. Part of the problem may be residual reputation of places like the Philippines and Thailand from 10-20 years ago. Particularly the military guys that were stationed in the Philippines a long time ago. Things change over time. It helps to have UA-camrs like yourself update living conditions in SE Asia but many people just don't listen, are terrible planners, or have little experience living and traveling abroad. In the end there is no substitute for an exploratory visit and not cutting your ties to back home until you are really sure you can love living in a foreign country. Also have a good reason to live here besides just cost-of-living and dating. Expat living isn't for everyone. I chose Thailand 7 1/2 years ago. No regrets.

After researching South East Asian for about 3 years, while waiting to start my pension, Boracay was my choice. I've been here for a little over two months now and have settled in. I would have to say one has to be adaptable to your surroundings. This is not North America and I don't expect it to be. Its always a give and take. You can't beat the beaches here and there is a decent gym in Boracay, that's all I need! I was just thinking today that the Philippines is a lot like life was growing up in the 60's & 70's, before governments got too involved!

Don't just stay in one place because for sure you will get tired and having stress for all the things come your way.

I don't think most vloggers sugar coat much of anything about the Philippines, it's just that most don't keep harping on the negatives over and over and over. If you live here, you know what the negatives are and don't need repeated over and over and over again. My filipina wife of 15 years and I are retired here and enjoy the positives about the Philippines and ignore the petty negatives. Negatives are in every country.

Yes some vloggers do sugar coat the Philippines. Why? If they talk too negatively about it viewers will not want to move there and they lose viewers. Also if locals find out that you’re bashing their country, they may take offense to it. As a viewer we just need to sift between the reality and the bs. As someone who is fairly familiar with the Philippines (I’m not living there yet) you and a few other vloggers give out some very useful advice for those thinking about moving there. I watch a few different vloggers and sometimes I learn something new from their trial and error. The hope is when I do get there I won’t be repeating mistakes that have already been made. Don’t worry though, I’ll still be making plenty of mistakes on my own 😂.

One thing that does seem to be sugar coated right now, is the real risk of war between the Philippines and China. The dispute over the Nine dash line. Plus the real possibility of China invading Taiwan. The USA just last week, had to remind China it is obligated by treaty to defend the Philippines. Something every foreigner visiting the Philippines needs to be aware of. It only needs one missile fired in anger, for war to break out. One of the 1st things to happen will probably be......all international flights will avoid the Philippines as a precautionary measure. In other words, foreigners could get stuck there for an indefinite period. All imo.

  • @fastpistonx

Your video was excellent. People must embed themselves into a country for at least six months before making any commitments. Very good advice. No country is the same and our personalities are all different. Philippines major selling point is language and largely Westernized culture as most Filipinos have worked abroad or have relatives abroad. Indeed look at videos and talk to other expats.

The only positive thing about the Philippines is the girls. I guess if youre only making 1500-2000 dollars a month, you can sacrifice and make ends meet there. Most of the vloggers have only lived here a couple of years and do not understand the nuisances of the culture.

Seems like most vloggers always circle back to women. If that is your main reason for coming just be aware that your woman might just cause you more stress and anxiety than the brownouts, roosters, dogs , trash , infrastructure , and slow way everything is done here that might irritate you. The women with tampo, jealousy, and their other quirks that you are dealing with 24/7 might be more of a problem , while your other concerns are intermittent. It isn't all palm trees and boom boom.
